Nadia Murad Basee Taha (born in 1993) is an Iraqi Human Rights Activist from Kojo, Iraq. For three months, she was kidnapped and held captive by the Islamic State. Nadia recently won the Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Furthermore, the activist shares this honor with the Denis Mukwege. He is a Congolese gynecologist and founder of Panzi Hospital.

In addition, Murad’s efforts to end the use of sexual violence were the reason for her achievement. She is also the founder of founder of Nadia’s Initiative. The organization helps in rebuilding the lives of women and children who were the victims of human trafficking.

When Murad was just 21-year-old, Islamic State fighters attacked in her Yazidi community in the village. Moreover, they killed almost 600 people including activist’s six brothers and half-brothers.

Later, the terrorists took the younger women into the slavery. Nadia was also one of more than 6,700 Yazidi women who was taken as prisoners by Islamic State fighters. The 25-year-old activist was raped multiple time, burned with cigarettes, and beaten. They were held in the city of Mosul.

 

Furthermore, she was a student when they kidnapped her and her two sisters. Her family belonged to the Yazidi ethno-religious minority. They were also farmers. Later, her all family members killed by the ISIS. In February 2015, when she was staying in the Rwanga camp gave her first testimony to the famous newspaper.

Moreover, Nadia became one of 1000 women and children who was benefited by the government of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Currently, the 25-year-old social worker lives in Germany with her sister Dimal.

In August 2018, Nadia Murad engaged to her fiancé “Abid Shamdeen”. He is also an activist and working with the Nadia. Shamdeen works for Yazda, a US-based NGO. The couple first met during Murad difficult time. In fact, he helped her to recover from the tragedy.

 

 

Nadia Murad often travels advocating for Yezidis and Shingal all over the world.The 25-year-old social worker is also the UN Goodwill Ambassador.Furthermore, almost 2,500 to 5,000 Yezidis killed by ISIS attackers.The 6,417 Yezidis held captive out of which only 3255 people could able to free.Moreover, she received the award “Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought” in 2016.She is also the First Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking of the United Nations.On November 7, 2017, her book titled “The Last Girl” published.
